Farm Journal Foundation

Client

In my role as a Project/Creative Manager, Designer, and Photographer at Farm Journal Foundation, I was entrusted with transforming a small garden on the USDA campus in Washington D.C. into an immersive walkthrough showcasing U.S. agriculture. I oversaw the hiring of ambassadors, designed garden layouts, produced photo and video content, and collaborated with the USDA for weekly farmers' markets. Garden photography was utilized for promotional materials and documenting garden changes, while strategically placed signage provided informative and visually appealing directions for visitors. The garden tour, accessible through a dedicated website, enhanced the experience by offering self-guided exploration and in-depth information about the garden's history and events.

In addition to my role as an illustrator and designer, I also utilized my photography skills to capture the captivating essence of the garden exhibit. Through careful composition and attention to detail, I documented the beauty and intricate details of the plants, showcasing their vibrant colors and textures. These photographs were then utilized in promotional materials, showcasing the allure of the garden and enticing visitors to explore further. The combination of illustrations, graphic design, and photography brought a multi-dimensional aspect to the garden signage, website, and overall visitor experience, creating a visually compelling and informative journey through the world of U.S. agriculture and food security.

The Photography

As part of the comprehensive visitor experience, the dedicated website showcased the garden's beauty and educational value. The website featured an interactive walking tour section that took visitors on a virtual journey through the garden. Within this section, illustrations and graphic design elements were used to enhance the visual storytelling. The illustrations depicted the crops and plants in their natural environment, creating an immersive and engaging online experience. The graphic design elements were thoughtfully integrated into the website's layout, providing visitors with informative captions, descriptions, and interesting facts about each stop on the tour. The combination of illustrations, graphic design, and layout design ensured that the website and walking tour provided an engaging and informative experience, deepening visitors' connection with the garden's offerings.

Illustrating a personal touch, I incorporated hand-drawn illustrations of the crops grown in the garden into the signage. These detailed and visually appealing illustrations brought life to the signage, showcasing the diversity and beauty of the plants visitors would encounter. Additionally, some of the signage featured graphic design elements that seamlessly integrated informational content. By combining illustrations and graphic design, the signage provided not only aesthetic appeal but also valuable information about the crops, agricultural practices, and their significance. Careful attention was given to layout design, ensuring that the signage was visually engaging and easy to read, allowing visitors to absorb the information effortlessly while enjoying the garden's ambiance.

To further enhance the visitor experience, a range of giveaways, apparel, and exhibit materials were incorporated into the garden exhibit. Marketing giveaways such as stickers, seed sticks, info cards, pins, and honey jars sourced from one of our ambassador farmers were distributed during the weekly farmers markets.
